Is Stephen Harper insincere or just dumb?

Here’s a question for you fine folks.
Does anybody know the year Newfoundland joined Confederation?
Well, if you said 1949, you’re right on the money.
But if you said 1867, you could probably use a refresher course in Canadian History.
But that’s OK. You’re in good company. The Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper didn’t know the answer either.
Yeah, Steve was on the Rock throwing around money, kissing up to the locals and warning them about how bad things would be if the Liberals get elected in the next election, which will be soon if the way he’s burning through our tax dollars to win votes is any indication.
On a two-day campaign-style swing through Newfoundland and New Brunswick, Steve gave $3 million in funding to the town of Cupids for its 400th anniversary in 2010.
Kissing up to the crowd of 100, Steve looked kinda dumb when he said it was like a reunion when Newfoundland and Labrador became part of Canada - nearly a century before the province actually did.
"So when Newfoundland finally joined together with us in Confederation in 1867, we all say it was like a family reunion,” Steve said.
The provinces that joined up to become Canada in 1867 were New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec.
Newfoundland, the last province to do so, didn’t join Canada until 1949 after a close referendum.
Everybody knows politicians make their livings saying things people want to hear. It doesn’t matter what their political stripe is, it’s almost always the same. But let’s be honest here. Harper wasn’t in Cupids, Newfoundland because he gives a tinker’s damn about the town’s upcoming 400th or considers Newfoundland a part of the family. He was there to dazzle with some bucks and some bull and try to win as many votes as he can. He knows it, they know it, we all know it.
You can almost respect that.
Bu the fact that he didn’t even know which century Newfoundland joined Canada, well sir, it kind of makes his words about a family reunion sound almost … insincere.
But wait a second. Maybe he’s not insincere. Maybe he’s just dumb.
And it’s not like being dumb is a crime or anything. And as the leader of a country, Steve’s probably above average when it comes to being a dummy. There are certainly worse offenders. (Can y’all say Dubya?)
I’ve got it. Let’s get rid of this whole election racket and every four years have the candidates square off in a good old-fashioned game of Jeopardy. Smartest person runs the country for the next four years. It would save three or four hundred million bucks and we’d all get to see just how smart (or dumb) the next prime minister really is.
Hmmm.
On second thought, some things are probably best left unknown.
