Cold-hearted boss fires Ontario waitress who shaved head for cancer research
If you happen to be in Owen Sound, Ontario in the not-too-distant future, you might see the owner of Nathaniel’s restaurant boarding up his once-thriving business.
Why?
Well, because he raised the ire of the community and the nation by firing one of his waitresses for shaving her head to raise money for cancer research.
Last week Stacey Fearnell, a 36-year-old waitress at Nathaniel’s restaurant was fired after she shaved her head to raise money for Cops for Cancer.
Stacey, who lost her father to cancer, made the decision to chop off her lovely red locks because she has a friend battling cancer.
"I felt like this was a pretty easy thing for me to do to raise money to help people," Stacey, who raised more than $2,700 for Cops for Cancer, told reporters Thursday.
Even though Stacey, who’s had been working at the restaurant for two years, told her bosses what she was planning, the owner wasn’t impressed with her new do.
He wanted her to wear a wig to cover her shaved head during her shifts. She said no. He sent her home with a “layoff.”
"'We'll call it a layoff.' That's what he said," Stacey said her her boss told her. "'Spend the summer with your kids.' I call it losing my job."
When word got out in the community about how Stacey lost her job, it didn’t take long for people to start talking boycott.
The owner, with a now quickly-diminishing clientele issued a statement late Thursday saying Stacey didn’t let him know that she was planning to shave her head. He says he's already heard from some customers who agree with him and say they would have been "appalled" to be served by Stacey.
Come again? What planet do you and your pals live on buddy? And what year is it there?
Cause down here on Earth in 2008, it’s not shameful for a woman or a man to choose to be bald. What is a shame is for a woman or a man to be forced to be bald because they’re battling cancer. Stacey sacrificed a part of herself to help find a cure for cancer and her boss treated her like three-day old garbage.
Stacey’s still standing tall though.
"I think it's for a good cause," she said. "It's not hurting anybody and it doesn't affect my ability to work."
She said she is working at a new part-time job where her boss loves her new look and has offered her extra shifts.
Still, it’s hard to believe in this day and age that someone could be so socially irresponsible, so cold-hearted and just so plain dumb as her old boss.
All he’s done is brand himself as a jerk, and quite possible driven himself out of business.
If the owner of the restaurant has the sense that God gave a platypus, he’ll apologize to the nice lady, hire her back with a pay raise and make a donation to Cops for Cancer. But here’s betting the platypus is the smarter of the two and Nathaniel’s is about ready to go belly up.
