Make sentences stick for pedophiles

California Governor Arnold Shwazenager visisted Canada last week. His big discussions with our top brass revolved around how Canada and the U.S. should band together to crack down on movie piracy.
The words of the movie-star-turned-politician must have struck home, cause three federal departments started taking action on the issue before his plane was headed back Stateside.
Too bad the Terminator didn’t come to Canada to talk about something important, like how our two countries should get together to form a cross-border policy on child predators.
The Miramichi police are concerned about the probation conditions imposed on former MLA James Gordon who was charged and pleaded guilty in Miami to lewd and lascivious conduct with a child under 16 earlier this year. Because the judge sentenced Gordon using the term "withhold adjudication," he will have no criminal record if he completes his probation.
Gordon, who lives in Lower Newcastle, was the Conservative member for Miramichi Bay between 1982 and 1987 in Richard Hatfield’s government.
On Jan. 6, Miami Dade police arrested 58-year-old Gordon at the Miami Airport.
A 15-year-old boy said Gordon followed him into the washroom and began masturbating in the urinal next to him.
He said Gordon made strange noises and reached for the boy's urinal. The teen went into a bathroom stall and locked the door. When Gordon reached under the side of the stall, the boy ran out and identified Gordon to police.
No one seems to know why why Gordon was in Florida at that time.
Last month, a judge sentenced Gordon to five years probation with the condition he report to police if he ever returns to Florida.
Miramichi police Superintendent Randy Hansen said in a report American authorities alerted local police about Gordon's sentence, and that the probation conditions are only enforceable in the United States.
"Obviously it's a major concern any time we get information of that nature from any other agency advising of us of someone that's in our jurisdiction who's involved in any criminal activity of any sort," Hansen said.
"It's always a major concern to us and we certainly take that stuff seriously."
I think something should be done. And not just to Gordon. Across the board. The fact that a person can be convicted of a sex offense on one side of the border and walk away scott-free on the other side screams injustice.
U.S. and Canadian authourities should put their heads together and come up with some sort of policy when it comes to crimes such as these so that sentencing actually means something.
They’re doing it with movies. And seriously, what’s the more important issue here? The fact that millionaires like Arnold can’t make more millions, or protecting young people from dangerous sexual predators?
Hopefully this case will be an example to law makers and others with the power to affect change. Cause the next time a cild molester gets off Scott-Free, what’s to stop them from saying “I’ll be back?”
