Mike (The Machine) Mallais world's fastest drummer
Here's a show of support for a guy from this river who's doing great things with the talent he was born with.
Mike (The Machine) Mallais is heading off to Anaheim, California - yes the land of swimming pools and movie stars - to try his hands - and feet - as the world's fastest drummer.
Yes, friends and neighbours, there really is such a thing, and Mike is definitely a contender.
Mike heads for the 2007 World's Fastest Drummer Extreme Sport Drumming competition on Wednesday, where he'll compete in three categories, the hands double stroke in 60 seconds, the 60 seconds feet and the 15-minute endurance feet.
I stood on the sidewalk outside of Saltwater Sounds on Water Street in Chatham last summer and watched the hometown boy entertain passersby with his high-speed drum-playing prowess, while educating them about the sport. He spent the summer playing at other places along the river, including the annual pumpkin toss on Waterford Green.
And as his nickname suggests, he really does play the drums like a machine.
These appearances were all part of a fundraising effort to get him enough money to travel to Anaheim to compete in the event. Guinness Book of World Records reps will be there and Mallais wants to knock their socks off.
Got to give the guy credit, he's got a dream, a big one, and he tackling it head on. He's got a lot of heart.
Mike's an excellent example, especially to young people, that you can go your own way in life, do your own thing, and be the best.
Mike competed in the Canadian World's Fastest Drumming 2006 competition held in Quebec in October, becoming Canadian champion for both hands and feet with 960 beats a minute for hands and 974 a minute for feet. Though unofficial, this makes him the third fastest drummer on the planet, he says.
In Halifax in 2005 he stole the title as the fastest Maritime drummer for doing 989 strokes a minute for hands.
In an interview on www.WorldsFastestDrummer.com, Boo McAfee, co-founder of Extreme Sport Drumming, said it's impressive to watch these competitors go.
"To see these guys go at it, full-throttle, smooth as silk with their hands and feet moving over 19-20 times per second for an entire minute is simply an amazing work of technical proficiency," McAfee said.
Grand prizes for this year's contest include a $4,000 drum set, a year's supply of drum sticks with the winner's name on them and smaller prizes.
On his Web site Mike said things are good as he counts down the last few days, but busy he's as you might well imagine.
With his flight only hours away now, Mike is still fundraising, unsure of what unexpected costs he'll run into when he gets to Anaheim.
If anyone would like to make a donation to him through Paypal.com or if you'd just like to wish him well, his email address is L_Injection@hotmail.com.
Good luck, old buddy.
Bring it home for us.

Soon he would have to be making for what lea the western shore offered; but he was holding to the middle of the river as lexapro long as he could, because with every mile the shores were growing more familiar, calling to him to make what speed he could.. The Hoogencamp-Biggle-Tabb-Halkit contingent never stirred pseudoephedrine off Jacobus's veranda; but we both felt that the Bredes would not profane that sacred scene.. He was leaning, lidocaine with his arms folded, over the rim of the car; and with a pipe in his mouth, at which he puffed leisurely, seemed to be upon excellent terms with himself and the universe...
